Violin & Viola Lesson FAQ

What age can my child start violin or viola lessons?
Children can begin Suzuki violin as early as age 3. Viola students typically start a bit later, around age 5-6, depending on physical size. We assess readiness during the free trial lesson.
Does my child need their own instrument?
Yes, students need a properly sized instrument for daily practice. Young children use fractional-size violins (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, etc.) and upgrade as they grow. We can help you find an affordable rental or purchase option during your trial.
What's the difference between violin and viola lessons?
The instruments are closely related, and the Suzuki approach works beautifully for both. Viola is slightly larger with a deeper, richer tone. Some students start on violin and transition to viola later. We can discuss which is right for your child.
Do parents need to attend string lessons?
Absolutely. Parent involvement is essential in the Suzuki method. You attend lessons, take notes on technique and posture, and guide daily practice at home. No musical experience is needed.
How often should my child practice?
Daily practice is key to the Suzuki method. For young beginners, even 10-15 minutes of focused practice is effective. As students advance, practice time naturally increases. Consistency matters more than duration.
